Hedemora historik

English text.
At the turn of the 19th century into 20th century many of the Swedish folk costumes where reconstructed.
The interest for the local history went like a wave through the country.
With help from old people and from estate inventories, the alderman Karl Trotzig reconstructed the
costume for Hedemora. On Midsummer eve 1905 at a big meeting the costume
was seen for the first time. This costume was very much a product of
Karl Trozig and his taste.
Ladies costume.
The skirt is in a very special blue colour, so called "Hedemorablue".
The women in Hedemora were famous,
even outside the country, for their very high skill in how to dye textiles and how to get this blue colour
and they also knew how to make the colour colourfast. Nowadays it is difficult to get hand-woven material
for the skirts, so mostof the time you have to buy it from a special supplier. The material for the vest is red wool.
It is tied up in the front with a string of yarn. The string is hidden behind an extra part that has the
shape of a heart. In Swedish it is called "hjärtlapp". The "heart" is buttoned up with buttons of brass.
The "heart" has embroideries and a green trimming of silk that goes all around the "heart". The blouse is
of white linen or cotton. With the everyday version you wear an apron made of 50% wool and 50% cotton
with green stripes. With this version you use a scarf of silk. You can find information about the more formal
version in the text under the picture. With both versions you always wear a headgear with a lace.
You also always wear a pochette. You have an option to choose between a few different colours and patterns
for both the headgear and the pochette. You close the scarf with a brooch of silver and down on the sleeves
you button-up the ribbons with cuff-links of silver. The cuff-links has a little red "dot" in the middle.
Red socks and black shoes go with the costume. You wear a blue or a green jacket with the costume.
It is double- breasted and the buttons have embroideries in the shape of a red star.
There is a trimming of
silk around the jacket.
Men's
costume.
The material in the vest is red wool. (It is the same material as in the women´s vest.) It is single-breasted
with buttons of brass. It has an upright collar. The shirt is of linen or cotton. With the shirt you use a male scarf,
tied up round the neck. The jacket is in a dark blue colour. It is double-breasted with buttons of brass.
The blue colour is the dominating colour both for the jacket and the knee-breeches. You can also find
this blue colour in the women´s skirt. The knee-breeches are buttoned up with buttons of brass.
Dark blue socks and black
shoes go with the costume.
